Work Experience

  • January 1993-present. Freelance web developer and technical writer, Tijeras, New Mexico. Design and produce policy reports, technical manuals, marketing materials, and personal stationery with an emphasis on producing attractive small-run print jobs for developing businesses. Design and implement World Wide Web sites with an emphasis on efficient, hand-crafted design and friendly user interfaces.

  • December 1988-October 1995. Director of Production Services, National Migrant Resource Program, Inc., Austin, Texas. Oversee production of all print materials for private nonprofit corporation. Projects include a semi-monthly newsletter with a national circulation of 5,800; two annual directories; periodic research and policy reports; and educational materials for farmworkers and migrant health care providers. Responsibilities include technical writing and editing; publication design; planning and managing departmental budget; developing bids for special projects; coordinating writers, illustrators, and other service providers; specifying printing jobs and selecting commercial printers; soliciting printing bids; and producing federal grant proposals. Also serve as Network Administrator for 20-station peer-to-peer LAN, performing software and hardware upgrades, troubleshooting, and internal technical support functions. Responsible for training staff on use of corporate Internet gateway and developing World Wide Web site for public information and awareness of farmworker issues.

  • August 1985-December 1988. Technical Writer and Customer Support Coordinator, Nova Graphics International Corporation, Austin, Texas. Produced user manuals and other documentation for high-end computer graphics software developer. Responsibilities included managing desktop publishing system; converting all documentation to consistent format; design and production of quarterly newsletter for customers and prospects; developing proposals for engineering contracts, including government and DoD contracts; and designing and updating marketing literature.

  • October 1982-June 1985. Administrative Assistant, Texas Rural Health Field Services Program, School of Social Work, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas. Served as office manager for small grant-funded program. Responsibilities included editing and producing all publications, including research reports, fact sheets, and directories; producing grant proposals for private foundations; providing information and technical assistance to students, rural residents and communities, other associations and organizations, and state and federal policymakers regarding health issues in nonmetropolitan areas; compiling and analyzing statistics for reports and fact sheets; maintaining statewide network of policymakers and other interested parties; and maintaining libraries on rural health issues and potential funding sources.

  • January 1981-December 1981. Technical Writer, DDI Systems Corporation, Bryan, Texas. Worked with programmers in start-up corporation to produce documentation for computer-aided design package marketed to architects. Responsibilities included writing and editing user manuals and producing illustrations using CAD package.

  • September 1978-December 1980. Microtext Clerk II, Sterling C. Evans Library, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Taught library patrons to locate and use collections and equipment in microfiche, microfilm, and microprint formats. Responsibilities included collaborating with Librarian and Library Assistant on an index to previously inaccessible research collections, initiating cataloguing of microforms, assigning call numbers to new materials and archival materials, and hiring and training student workers and clerks.
