Malachi Kennedy
Mal had only been a member of 1st Mountain ABATE since March, but already he felt he had a new family. It was because of that feeling that Mal headed up North 14, after the June ABATE meeting, stopping along the way to hang flyers for the State ABATE picnic. After spending a couple of hours at the Mineshaft Tavern in Madrid, talking to other bikers about the event, he headed home, back down Highway 14. As he rounded a curve near Paa-Ko, he must have been thinking about the beautiful ride and the upcoming State Picnic, his first, and he lost control of the bike, crashed and his life ended….the same way he lived it - hard and fast.
Mal lost his wife and son years ago in Wisconsin and his blood-family did not want to claim his body and give him a proper send off. So his new brother, Mike Baca, First Mountain's Coordinator, arranged to have his body released, and First Mountain ABATE and Mal's friends in town, Frank Montoya and Teresa Montano, have raised enough money to have Mal cremated. We now plan a ride to Red River, where he had so much fun with his new family over Memorial Day, to spread his ashes and have a rum & coke in his memory.
An Ode to Mal
He found us when he needed us most -
Turning the corner, seeming no longer lost.
He rode to Red River and spent all the days
Riding, & partying... oh the hell he could raise!
We took him in - he became part of our family.
A brother in riding - a nicer guy you won't see!
He gave to us all much more than he took
Even those who don't know him would give him a look.
The picnic we planned was quite an event -
He pitched right in and up Highway 14 he went.
Passing out flyers and spreading the word
Riding his Honda as free as a bird.
He must have been thinking "what a beautiful site"
The forest, the streams, the mountains so high.
Then Mal took a curve - maybe too fast
And in one instant his time here had passed.
He's now up there riding with Lanky, and Bill -
With Gigi & DJ guiding him high over a hill.
Ride with the wind guys - We'll be there one day -
And ride into the sunset - forever to play.
