Christmas In July Run
Patty shared thank-you notes from Bethel House and The Sanctuary Zone for the food and toys raised at the run. There was a total of $549 that needed to be dispersed. After discussion, it was decided by vote to give each chariety $100 and Team ABATE $200, with the remaining funds to go into our crash fund ($100) and cash on hand ($49). Also suggested was to have a can at each meeting to add money to build our crash fund back up. A collection at the meeting brought in another $58 to give our crash fund a total of $158. It was also suggested that we should know before a benefit how much and where the money will go. Patty responded that 30 percent of all monies would have to go to charities according to the bylaws, and the amount would not be known ahead of time.
Thank you to all who helped with prizes for the benefit, including the blanket made by Diana Martinez, the clock made by Top, and the watch they donated; the Ponderosa for two $25 gift certificates; and lots of caps, t-shirts, and a very nice Dale Earnhart Jr. mirror which was auctioned off three times! Thanks to Leslie from East Mountain Wildcrafters for her basket of soap/candle goodies as well as individual soaps; Mike and Leigh Baca for the Moriarty coffee mugs and other gifts; and Patty for the salsa; and Chris Calhoun for her generous gift certificates for massage. Thanks to those who helped at the beginning and the end of the run. Once again, thanks to the Ponderosa for being wonderful hosts at the end. If we have left someone out we apologize, but thank you anyway!
Elections
Due to lack of a quorum at the last July meeting, it was decided to open the nominations for Chapter Coordinator and Treasurer. Big D shared a few words of motivation about how it is our obligation to fulfill roles of leadership in an organization such as ours. We cannot continue to grow and move forward if we are all "hang-a-longs." Nominations for coordinator are Damon Phillips and Mike Baca. Mike explained his other commitments and said he would be willing to take on the role with the condition that we might have to change the second meeting of the month or have the deputy coordinator fill in. Nominations for Treasurer were Charlene Guffey and Mita Saldaña. Charlene withdrew her name, as Mita agreed to step back in for another term. A ballot will be sent out with this mailing and it is to be postmarked no later than August 31 (or bring them to the next meeting (August 21).
Red River
Dee read another article about the "Red River" incident, but expressed concern that it didn't even happen in Red River. He also noted that Colorado ABATE has attacked us for our lack of a voice in the issue. He has volunteered as the State ABATE Secretary to draft a letter stating our position. He would like as many editorials as we can send him for the State ABATE newsletter. Sharp brought up the fact that there appears to be no accountability for the police officers who failed to follow protocol and guidelines involving a murder investigation because they were familiar with the boy involved. Dee said that it is very difficult to prove dereliction of duty. We must be careful what we say and how. Top also added that if we publicly slander other organizations (such as the Police Department) we can expect to be harassed. We need to approach it a little differently: Send letters to the editor; ask if a protocol was followed and if not, why? Diane S. brought up a radio talk show on KKOB that centered on two of the victims of the incident. She also mentioned how this could be a great platform. Barb reported that the COC is also working on a statement to send.
New Business
Labor Day Campout to Fenton Lake
A motion was made an carried to reserve the group site for the annual campout. This will be September 2-5. As in the past, the chapter will supply one evening meal. A show of hands was made to estimate the number of people who would be attending. As of this meeting it was about 10 people. The chapter pays the group camping fee, but a fee is usually charged for each car which the individual would be responsible for. Ride your bikes or carpool!
School Supply Run, August 28
Our annual school supply run, which benefits the East Mountain elementary schools, will begin at Showstoppers and end at the Ponderosa, with stops at the schools. Coffee cans will be distributed like our last run, with pre-made envelopes. First bike out will be at 11 a.m. and last bike out at noon. Raffle drawings will be at 2 p.m. at the Ponderosa. Sharp is working a flyer to get out this week and asked for volunteers to distribute them. We really need members to go out and get prize donations for the raffles. Please bring them to the next meeting. Also of note, Duck is hosting a benefit for Miss Rodeo New Mexico 2006, Jesse Gearhart, at his place from noon until 5 on the same day. There will be food, a band, and lots of great raffle prizes. If you are able to stop by either during or after our run, your support would be appreciated. We will be handing out flyers at the Ponderosa.
Announcements
Top shared a letter from Boomer in Iraq. His email address is dinamiteshack@aol.com; address is Tech. Sgt. Curtis Keel, Joint IED Task Force, APO-AE 09342. Boomer, we miss you and thank you for your commitment to our country!
Joe is back home. Please take a moment to give him a call or stop by and say hellow. 286-1513. We also received a very nice thank-you note from Shirley and Joe.
Diane Sandlin volunteered to do a monthly or quarterly chapter newsletter.
Mita will make copies of the bylaws for those who have requested them. We also need to have a supply on hand to give to new members along with a calendar and membership list.
We are presently trying to update the membership list, as there were a large number of expired memberships. Plans are to make copies and have them available at the next meeting.
Last, the Bacas would like to personally thank each of you for your financial support of Jacob in his motocros racing. "We would not be able to embark on this sport without your help. In addition to the $200 that was donated from the last run, a hat was passed and over $100 was collected. We can't thank you enough. After the last race, the transmission and engine had to be rebuilt. The oney you donated will help to get it back in the bike and ready for the next race. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 a.m.
