ABATE of New Mexico

Meetings

This is a summary of the minutes from the June 1, 2008 chapter meeting:

Big D called the unofficial meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. He announced the resignation of the Secretary and Treasurer, and asked Mita to put together a short treasurers report, as past chapter treasurer. He also asked for a volunteer to act as secretary until the term was completed. Joyce Casey, past secretary, volunteered to take the position.

He then reminded us all that he stands behind all members, and if problems arise asked that we talk to him, aside from others. He also reiterated that all members of the 1st Mountain Chapter should do whatever is necessary to keep the family going and support other members, and to stand strong on motorcycle freedoms and political rights.

He then welcomed guests, members of the Estancia Valley, and Rio Rancho ABATE.

As at the beginning of all meetings, we stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Treasurer's Report

Secretary's Report

A motion was made and seconded to waive the Secretary's report.

Old Business

Motorcycle Awareness Month
May was Motorcycle Awareness Month; Barbara Alvar reported disappointing attendance at planned functions. Big D asked whether or not flyers, posters, bumper stickers, etc. were distributed by the state. Barbara said that due to the current political climate and funding, none were done. She also said that this should be done, possibly in early fall, so state allocated monies can be used.

Final Jeopardy
A discussion of a Final Jeopardy question a couple of weeks ago was held. The question, which all three contestants missed, was: How many steps does the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington take, and why? Cheri Casey-Chavez and Santana Franz, who by the way just returned from a trip to our nation's capital, did know the answer. For all you vets out there, it is 21, a sign of the 21 gun salute, the highest honor given a veteran. THANKS VETS!!

State ABATE
Ballots for State ABATE Treasurer and Deputy Coordinator are due. If you received ballots, don't send them in as there has been a last minute addition. Barbara and Lori will send these out before the next meeting.

Membership Drive
A 1st Mountain Chapter membership drive will be held on Sunday, 15 June at Coffee at Dawn in Cedar Crest, at 9 a.m. Cheri, Big D, Joyce and Santana volunteered to work the table. All members, of other chapters are invited to attend. It is Fathers Day, so bring all the Dads out for coffee and companionship. Call Cheri at 286-0580 if you have questions.

Miss Kitty
Miss Kitty, our Events Coordinator, has been very sick, so please keep her in your thoughts. Rhonda reminded us in her absence that they have an order list for vests, available in both denim and leather. These will be sold at the State Picnic, but can be purchased ahead of time by chapter members, at a reduced rate. Please contact them if you have any questions or wish to place an order. Their phone number is 861-1436.

New Business

School Supply Run
July 20 is our scheduled School Supply Benefit Run. We decided to use the same route as in past years, beginning at Los Altos Park, and ending at the Ponderosa. George Bennett was asked to request that the Black Berets man the stops as they have in the past. Damon will talk to Johnny and Cindy about using the Ponderosa as end stop. Big D said we have 2 bands which might be asked to play, Easy Street and Triple X. The cost will be $10 for the first hand and $5 for each additional hand. Members are asked to help obtain raffle prizes. A committee was formed to finalize plans; Mike Baca, Carly Zeedyk, Barbara Alvar, and Santana Franz all volunteered.

Fenton Lake Campout
Big D will check to see if the campground has been reserved, and Mike will reserve it if not. The dates are August 29 - 1 September.

Rider Rights
Big D showed us a copy of a "Rider Rights and Civil Liberties" pamphlet. He will obtain copies for each member.

State Picnic
State Picnic is June 28 and 29. Raffle prizes are still needed, as well as more sales of raffle tickets. Contact Barb Alvar if you can get prizes or need tickets.

Clean and Sober Run
June 21 at 9 a.m., the 2nd annual Survivors, Clean and Sober run will be held. This will begin at Daniel Fernandez Park in Rio Rancho at 9 a.m.

MRF Report
Barb reminded us about the HIPAA action. There will be an article in July newsletter. Contact your house representatives and ask them to co-sponsor this bill.

NMMRO Report
NMMRO meeting was 2 weeks ago; 22 people at meeting. Lots of great ideas. Watch for emails from Barb concerning MRF and NMMRO, and other issues.

NCOM Report
NCOM convention largest ever, 1600 in attendance, 1100 patch-holders. This brings us together collectively as clubs, but patchholders come for "Show and Tell" and the majority do not participate in workshops. 2010 convention will be in Albuquerque. Big D will ask for ABATE's help in planning, and support... we saw that coming Big D!!!!

Announcements

Former State Coordinator Liz Espinosa is undergoing chemo treatments. Barbara asked that we keep her in our thoughts, and give her a call or write a note. Contact Barb (792-3207) for her address or phone number.

Carly announced…to anyone who had not heard, that Boomer arrives back from Iraq on Wednesday, June 4, at 12:30 pm. Welcome home Boomer. Party Time TBA.

Joyce welcomed granddaughter Santana back for the first time in 2 years. Tana has been working at Jenks and worked every Sunday. She has been an Associate Member for several years, and now since she is 18, will change her membership to full member. Our future is in good hands if she is any indication!

Another future leader, Jacob Baca is recovering from his accident, practicing this weekend, and has his first race next weekend. Good luck Jake, keep the rubber side down!

Barbara asked if she could take a couple of t-shirts for prizes for MRF. This was approved. We also ok'd giving t-shirts for State ABATE picnic prizes.

As always if anything comes up, good or not-so-good, contact someone. We have phone trees, emails and personal notes available, which can reach most members.

We collected $56 in pass-the-hat for our crash fund.

Scott asked that anyone with stories, etc for the fall edition, contact them early. (Contact info will be in the July publication.)

Big D thanked everyone for their support, attendance, & interest.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.

Respectfully submitted by Joyce Casey
