1st Mt ABATE has lost a member of their family. Malachi Kennedy came to us from Chicago and was killed on the return trip from Madrid, where he was passing out flyers for the State Picnic. Mike has been in contact with the M.E. and has volunteered to take the responsibility of cremating him in the event no family can be reached; at this time it looks as if he has no family but ours. A plan to ride up to Red River and scatter his ashes has been agreed upon. We will keep you updated and you can always call Mike at 281-5147 for the latest info.

From Patty Berry, State Coordinator, ABATE of New Mexico: ABATE of New Mexico has unexpectedly become involved with two additional fundraising events this year: the Memorial Run for David Fisher and Garrett Iverson and the Battle of the Bands Run for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Considering the natures of these events, I am not surprised that ABATE's members have chosen to become involved. In both cases, we were aked to participate because people believe that ABATE can get things done.

On October 2, we will be raising money to purchase memorial plaques for David Fisher and Garrett Iverson. This is the motorcycling community's gift to their families. Any additional funds raised will go to Audra Iverson and her infant son. Audra has asked to be involved in the planning of this event. The community's response so far has already been phenomenal. We need many volunteers.

On November 5 we will be raising funds to send to ABATE of Louisiana for hurricane relief. The idea for this event came from the employees of the Ponderosa Restaurant after they found ABATE of Louisiana's request for help on the internet. They want to help ABATE of Louisiana because of us. I am honored that they feel this way. If you didn't believe before that what goes around comes around, you should now. ABATE of Louisiana will distribute all funds that they receive to hurricane victims. Once again, volunteers are needed.

This is a lot more work than we expected to do this year, but it is certainly not beyond our capabilities. The more of you who volunteer to help, the easier it will be. Once again, when something needs to get done, ABATE of New Mexico is there and this is what our community has come to expect from our organization.

Two employees at Rider Valley Motorcycles were murdered at the shop last week. Angel has been in contact with their families to offer a motorcycle escort for their funeral processions. The family of David Fisher expressed gratitude but has declined as they wish to keep the funeral quiet and private. However, ABATE will be providing an escort and road guards for the procession for Garrett Iverson. The service is Wednesday, August 24 at 2 p.m. at French's on Lomas, with burial at Fairview Memorial Park at 700 Yale SE. Riders for the escort need to assemble in the back parking lot at 1:30. If you can join us, please call Angel (281-8673) ASAP to let her know.

Norton has arranged motorcycle escorts for the two Albuquerque police officers who were killed in related murders. The funeral for APD officer Michael R. King will be Tuesday, 23 August at 10 a.m. at Legacy Church, 7201 Central NW. Riders should form up in the parking lot on the northwest corner of Coors and Central, just south of the Blockbuster Video store. Departure time will be 9:45 a.m.

The funeral for APD officer Richard W. Smith will be Thursday, 25 August at 10 a.m. at Hoffmantown Church, 8888 Harper NE. Riders should form up in the parking lot on the southeast corner of Wyoming and Academy, just north of the Sears store. Departure time will be 9:45 a.m.

Thank you to all who helped with prizes for the Christmas In July benefit, including the blanket made by Diana Martinez, the clock made by Top, and the watch they donated; the Ponderosa for two $25 gift certificates; and lots of caps, t-shirts, and a very nice Dale Earnhart Jr. mirror which was auctioned off three times! Thanks to Leslie from East Mountain Wildcrafters for her basket of soap/candle goodies as well as individual soaps; Mike and Leigh Baca for the Moriarty coffee mugs and other gifts; and Patty for the salsa; and Chris Calhoun for her generous gift certificates for massage. Thanks to those who helped at the beginning and the end of the run. Once again, thanks to the Ponderosa for being wonderful hosts at the end. If we have left someone out we apologize, but thank you anyway!
